Skill mengetik? Skill mendengarkan?

Skill mengetik, skill mendengarkan, skill mengolah data, semuanya sangat mendukung pekerjaan sehari-hari.

STOP MOTION + IPAD

Hi!

I just had my "little" project while waiting for a short meeting. I have Stop Motion app in my iPad, then an idea comes.
Using Stop Motion, I took about 114 pictures to make this movie running in 8 frame per second. What is Stop Motion? It is an app that you can download through Apple Apps Store. I forgot how much I bought mine. It might be around $5.
Anyway, enjoy the movie entitled "Pertemuan" or in English we say "Encounter".

cheers,

Hugo

SOCIAL SKILLS

Using my classroom and other classrooms as laboratories had put me into a deep thought. Among many thoughts I had in mind, I stopped to one skill that students used naturally: Social Skills.

What are Social Skills?
In brief, Social Skills are skills that we use to communicate - verbally or non-verbally - with other people. In this writing, I mostly will see skills used in classrooms that related with social skills in general.

Social Skills in Classrooms
I will use some skills depicted in classrooms such as accepting responsibility, cooperating and resolving conflict. To my point of view, these three skills are related with each other. Once again, using my classrooms and other classrooms as laboratories, I saw these three skills - included in Social Skills - were really needed and powerful.

Accepting responsibility
Some students need extra encouragement to accept responsibility in some extends. Lack of confidence, fear, underestimating themselves might be some reasons to see. Here are some examples that I have seen happening in classrooms.
Why should I carry this responsibility? Can you please choose someone else? These questions are mostly asked by students with low self-esteem - sometimes a bit of fear that they might not lead well as it has been asked. This kind of reaction is like a disease. It is truly contagious to other students within the group. If my friends can escape from that responsibility, why can't I?
Again, as teachers, we need to give motivational inputs. Some students feel more comfortable when there is assignment to do, it is completed with the how to do list. We need to give them a bit insight then the rest of what will happen, we let them to anticipate as the real life will do similarly.

Cooperating
It is a bit difficult and frustrated sometimes for some students to cooperate themselves in a group work. Some of them might have an idea of becoming passive members as their sign of good cooperation. It is something that teachers need to aware of. Students with that kind of attitude soon or later will take everything passively. When starting the learning process, teachers need to give clear expectation on what is accepted and not accepted as a cooperation. Being attentive as well as active in sharing materials or opinion are some real actions in making word cooperation comes true.

Resolving Conflict
This skill is really hard when nobody wants to lose. For many children, loosing an argument is not a good way to impress their buddies. In a group work, conflict happens easily. One child wants to be more recognized than others and vice versa. As teachers, we need to remind students that it is better to keep the situation healthy than to let things loosen and conflict comes. Small things mean a lot such as listening to others, taking turns, reacting positively to others' opinion, compromising opinions, connecting things. To make things run smoothly, as teachers we need to guide and train students on reacting in such conditions.

Those are the skills that students need to improve. Once again, different classrooms will have different point of view as I see these skills needed in classrooms I have observed.

cheers,

H

GOOGLE SKETCHUP AND STUDENTS ACTION

In the 21st century learning environment, the use of application programs is unavoidable. Some programs have to be bought before downloaded. The good news is that a lot of programs are made freely for all users around the world.
One program out of many programs that really suits the 21st century teaching and learning is Google Sketchup. Not only teaching the students about shapes and maths application but also giving direction on how the students can take action by designing useful invention for their surroundings.

Therefore, in relation with the technology unit, my year  six students work individually in "designing" a useful technology. Surprisingly, they made things to help Jakarta as the Indonesia capital city. They dreamed to have some useful items such as "pollution house", "anti flood dam", "anti traffic", and many more. Surely, their designs were not the most detail ones as they were the experts. The way they responded on terrible things their city faces was one prove from many that the students had hearts to share with other citizens.

Some of them came to me and asked what I am making on my computer. I told them that I wanted to have a dam that able to avoid us from the flood as well as a water purifying dam. This kind of answered had triggered them to work on their design. Google sketchup really made them like experts. Here are some screen shots. Enjoy them!

LANGUAGE EXPECTATION

The internationalism has been a trend currently. People want to be still considered local while they also want to be part of international world. One way among many ways in embracing internationalism is to have fluency in some "world languages".

The languages that people have desire to master are English, France, Latin and Chinese. Besides those four languages, people will automatically master their own mother tongue. In some countries, people can have two mother tongues. Thus, if they learn two other world languages, then these people would be mastering four languages during their lives.

To be able to use some languages with good standard of fluency must be a great achievement. Some people find it easy as they are language naturalists; some find it hard.
The rapid changes of world's global economy encourages people to put language as an asset. There are any language courses are established to meet the need of language learners. There are many adults and kids register and learn within language courses.

Some schools that also want to embrace the internationalism apply certain language policy that they believe will enhance the language skill of their students. However, some schools have made themselves as "risk-taker" by applying "three-languages policy". The expectation is that students at the end of schooling will be able to use three languages in their lives.

The big question now is whether the students will master the three languages fluently or they will have one language mastered while other languages are just a failure?

Learning a language, I believe must be started with strengthening the mother tongue of a student. Once the mother tongue is established both in school and home, then the students will be able to master another language easily. Another support is that if a family wants the kids want to master two languages, then the family must also exposed every member of family with the correct use of the two languages. What about three languages? I really think that three languages is way too much.

Now, it goes back to school and family policy then.

Hugo

MOMMY GOES TO SCHOOL

Grade 1 TMIS,

"It must be nice to see our parents coming to school everyday". That idea comes from one of grade 1 students at TMIS. Well, I agree with that student.

Last week, Ibu Juliana, one of parents in grade 1 came to the classroom. She was invited by the grade 1 teacher, Ms. Puspa. The aim of her presence is to share her story about her daughter's activities from the morning until night.

She brought some pictures, books and other stuffs. She was really kind to tell her daughter's activities. There were many questions from students. Ibu Juliana was really happy to see how active and attentive the students were. Some of grade 1 students even asked when their mommies could come and shared stories. Soon!

MATHS AND GOOGLE EARTH

As we learn about scale and mapping, our class opened Google Earth. Google Earth is a great program that you can download from Google. Within the program, we can see geographical aspects throughout the earth. Even we can see our own neighborhood.

The best parts related to learning are the features within the program. It helps us to know about the daylight movement, mapping (as we can apply grid within the globe), longitude and latitude, and many more. In our class, we learn about everyone's house position. The students are looking closely at the area where they live. Then they start using the grid to know exactly the longitude and latitude.

The learning process keeps progressing as the students learn to map their school. They apply the grid system to know where their friends position within the school. It's so amazing when one of my students asked,"is it similar with the way GPS (Global Positioning System) system works?". Here we go, they started to get the point. Well, you may try with your class!

COLLABORATIVE WORK : BAHASA INDONESIA

Dear all,
It's been a while since my last post. It feels like ages to me! Frankly speaking, the workload is getting bigger and bigger. Now, I have my 10 minutes to write about our Bahasa Indonesia lesson.

Before Christmas holiday, I tried to get all the students to feel what we called "collaborative writing". I offered them to write a report writing. "What will be the theme?" one of them asked. I replied back with raising my eyebrows. "You decide!" Then the whole class tried to discuss. When one of them asked whether they can report their last unit researching about colonialism, the whole class agreed at once.

Without any hesitation, I divided them into four groups. They wrote within their group. The result was excellent! The four writing was there. I helped them by editing the diction and gave the opening. Then we collaborate the four writing. Wow! it was becoming powerful report writing. Each group had their own strong points that could be contributed perfectly!

When it had done, I told my partner Jane Ross. She gave us an idea of sending it to the newspaper. Fortunately, we have children newspaper in Indonesia. Jane Ross made a contact and sent the writing. After holiday, we got news that our class writing would be issued in January. WOW!

The newspaper, KORAN BERANI, gave us one page. It was Friday, January 16, 2009 and one of beautiful Fridays in my life. Here we are, in the newspaper. We are spreading the spirit of language, friendship, technology and internationalism. Thanks to Jane Ross, KORAN BERANI and thanks to Mrs. Elizabeth Van Kampen who always becomes our inspiration! and of course, thanks to all students!
